Armonk Int'l Tennis Academy

Winter Session

Armonk International Tennis Academy is an intensive 30-week program specifically designed for dedicated junior players. It has five different age/ability levels that allow players to continually set and attain individual goals. The Academy Prospects and Feeder programs are held at Armonk Tennis Club, while the others are held at Armonk Indoor. See below to determine the one that is most suitable for your child, or contact Academy Director Greg Johnstone at gjohnstone@armonkindoor.com for more information.

Academy Prospects

This group is aimed at players 7-11 years old. It introduces fundamental techniques with both the racquet and movement--techniques that will hold true to players their entire tennis lives. The ultimate goal is to provide players with a full understanding of the different swing types, stances, grips, and spins. Focus is solely on technique, both in private lessons and group clinics, and success is determined by how well players apply these techniques, not just by the outcome of their shots.

  • 1½-hour drill sessions 2 times per week
  • 5 private lessons

Location: Armonk Tennis Club
Time: Monday & Wednesday - 4:30-6:00 p.m.
Fee: $4995

Academy Feeder

This group is for players ages 10-15, primarily those who are committing to tennis at a slightly older age. It allows less experienced players to be trained in an academy setting and to be given the best opportunity to improve quickly. After perfecting the technical fundamentals, the focus shifts to consistency while using them. The objective is for players to improve to a level that feeds into the Elite Futures or Elite program.

  • 2-hour drill sessions 2 times per week
  • 10 private lessons
  • Supervised match play on Friday evening

Location: Armonk Tennis Club
Time: Monday & Wednesday - 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Junior Academy

The Junior Academy is for players ages 9-13 who are not quite ready to compete in tournaments. The primary focus of this group is to ensure that all players are implementing the correct techniques while consistenly hitting the ball in the court. Using a combination of "dead-ball" feeding and "live-ball" situations, players are able to hit a lot of balls and repeatedly practice what they have learned. Players are also introduced to point play and basic match tactics, although playing to improve is more important than playing to win.

  • 1½-hour drill sessions 2 times per week
  • 5 private lessonss
  • Supervised match play on Friday or Sunday evening
  • Free court usage at any open time

Location: Armonk Indoor Sports Center

Elite Futures Academy

The Elite Futures program is for tournament players 10-14 years old. In this group, players perfect their techniques in live-ball drills and learn to make correct technical adjustments themselves. At this level, players are no longer working on just consistency of shots, but consistency of high-quality shots, and mistakes are no longer limited to hitting the ball out or into the net. A large part of the program is point play, and players are taught to apply their techniques in tactical ways. Private technical lessons help players develop weapons and fix weaknesses, while group clinics focus on executing the right shot at the right time.

  • 2-hour drill sessions 2 times per week
  • 10 private lessons
  • Supervised match play on Friday or Sunday evening
  • 30-minute fitness sessions Monday-Thursday
  • Free court usage at any open time

Elite Academy

The Elite Academy is divided into two sections. One is for Varsity High School and L1 USTA tournament players, and the other is for Junior Varsity and USTA Level 2 tournament players. The goal is to improve the player's matchplay ability, so the sessions are entirely live-ball with a focus on shot selection, weight of shots, tactical application, and mental strength. Technical adjustments are now minimal and are made to ensure immediate improvement. During group clinics, players are taught to play in an individual style that will allow them to win tournament matches, not necessarily a style that they are comfortable or consistent with in practice. Semi-private technical training is used to enable coaches to see players from various angles and make adjustments during live tennis.
